URB Unveils Ambitious Dubai Mangroves Project to Revolutionize Coastal Regeneration

Dubai-based urban planning and development company URB has unveiled an ambitious proposal aimed at setting new standards for coastal regeneration in the city with its groundbreaking Dubai Mangroves project.

Dubai Mangroves aims to plant over 100 million mangrove trees along a 72-kilometer stretch of coastline, effectively enhancing Dubai’s coastal areas while prioritizing ecological preservation and sustainable urban development. This visionary initiative aligns closely with the city’s environmental objectives and the overarching goals outlined in the Dubai 2040 Master Plan.

Currently in the research phase, the project plans to implement six pilot design studies in specific areas, each serving as a testament to how infrastructure components can coexist harmoniously with mangrove restoration efforts. These multipurpose coastal landscapes will offer ecological, recreational, and aesthetic benefits, showcasing the potential for sustainable urban planning.

URB, known for its previous work on projects like The Loop and the Dubai Reefs Project, emphasizes the pivotal role of mangroves in the new initiative. Mangroves are renowned for their ability to sequester carbon, protect coastal regions from erosion, and foster marine life and food security. With each mangrove tree capable of absorbing 12.3 kg of CO2 annually, the project aims to sequester a staggering 1.23 million tonnes of CO2 annually, equivalent to the emissions of over 260,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles.

Baharash Bagherian, CEO of URB, underscores the project’s visionary approach, stating, “Dubai Mangroves is a testament to the transformative power of integrating ecological preservation with urban growth. It sets a global standard for how cities can balance the needs of the planet with the needs of the people.”

Educational resources are also integral to the project, with initiatives like the Mangrove Visitor Hub aimed at raising awareness and engaging both locals and tourists on the value of mangroves and broader environmental issues. Alongside the Botanical Museum and the Nature Reserve Conservation Center, the Mangrove Visitor Hub will serve as a focal point for advocacy, education, and research, fostering environmental stewardship among the community.

As URB propels forward with its Dubai Mangroves project, it not only revolutionizes coastal regeneration but also sets a precedent for sustainable urban development practices that prioritize ecological preservation and community engagement on a global scale.
